Sanctions & Export Control

Since the Trade War started years ago, the international trade landscape has dramatically shifted in a different direction. Exporters try to relocate their production to other countries to avoid high duties, while importers need to adjust their sourcing strategies to lower costs in the supply chain. The pandemic has also added complexity to this shifted landscape. Businesses in International trade must consider multiple factors and complex geopolitical conflicts in their operational strategies.

The most notable change to today’s international trade is the sanction and export control policies constantly imposed onto the supply chain in the name of “competition” or “national security.” More products are on the restricted lists for importation and/or exportation; people are restricted or prohibited from doing business with individuals or businesses that are sanctioned; moreover, money flow in international trade and investment has also encountered new issues.

Notwithstanding the above, classic international trade theory continues to work, simply because no country can operate independently without relying on another country’s resources. Pragmatically, we see that the world economies are complementary to each other. International trade and investment will continue to flow from one to the other, regardless of geopolitics and challenges of the trade environment. However, difficulties and challenges are very real. Sanction laws and export control regulations have changed the traditional way of doing business in today’s world.
